When to Replace Water Meter

How to determine if your meter is working correctly and when it's time for verification or replacement.

3 min read

Introduction

In Latvia, water meters must be verified every 4 years. However, sometimes a meter can fail earlier. Here's how to spot it.

Step by Step

  1. 1

Check the verification date on the meter seal or certificate. If expired - needs replacement.

  2. 2

Turn off all faucets and check if meter wheels are spinning. If yes - there's a leak somewhere.

  3. 3

Compare consumption with previous months. A sharp increase may indicate a problem.

  4. 4

Listen - if the meter squeaks or crackles, it may have mechanical damage.

  5. 5

Check if the meter glass is clear and readings are visible. Fogged glass indicates moisture inside.

Warnings

  • Never remove the seal yourself - this is an administrative violation!
  • An unsealed or damaged meter may result in maximum tariff penalty coefficients.
