Window Condensation Prevention
Why condensation forms on windows and how to prevent it to avoid mold and moisture problems.
Introduction
Window condensation is a common problem in Latvian homes, especially in autumn and winter. It's not just an aesthetic issue - prolonged condensation can cause mold growth, damage to wooden window frames, and health problems. Liepaja's coastal climate with high humidity makes this problem even more relevant.
Step by Step
- 1
Ensure regular ventilation - open windows at least 2-3 times daily for 5-10 minutes, even in winter. Short intensive airing is more effective and economical than keeping a window slightly open for long periods. This allows moist air to escape without completely cooling down the room.
- 2
Check and improve your ventilation system. In apartment buildings, make sure ventilation openings in the kitchen and bathroom aren't blocked. Hold a piece of paper against the opening - it should stick. If it doesn't, ventilation isn't working properly.
- 3
Reduce moisture sources indoors. After showering or bathing, always turn on the fan or open a window. When cooking, use the range hood. Don't dry laundry in living spaces - use a drying room or well-ventilated area.
- 4
Maintain optimal temperature in all rooms - at least 18-20 degrees C. Colder rooms promote condensation. Make sure radiators aren't blocked by furniture or curtains that prevent heat circulation near windows.
- 5
Check window seals and glass units. If condensation forms between the glass panes - the sealed unit is damaged and needs replacement. If window frames are old and drafty, consider window replacement or installing additional seals.
Warnings
- If condensation appears regularly and mold is already visible - act immediately! Mold can cause serious respiratory diseases, especially in children and allergy sufferers.
- Don't completely close ventilation openings even if they cause drafts - this will lead to even bigger moisture problems.
- Avoid excessive use of humidifiers - optimal indoor humidity is 40-60%.

Pro Tip
Buy an inexpensive hygrometer (5-15 EUR) and monitor humidity levels. If it regularly exceeds 60%, you need to improve ventilation or consider purchasing a dehumidifier.
